Title: Hall of Fame BoxerMost boxers are lucky if they have one or two “great” fights and one good rivalry with another top fighter, but Sugar Ray Leonard had more than his share of memorable bouts and fierce rivalries. After winning a gold medal in the 1976 Olympics, Leonard was pegged as a superstar before his first professional fight. He delivered on that promise by winning his first 25 bouts as a pro, mostly by knockout. In 1980, he lost his first fight against Roberto Duran in a very close decision that could have gone either way. Later that year, the two got back in the ring for a rematch. Known as the “no mas” fight, Duran quit in the eighth round and Sugar Ray got his title back. His 1981 fight against Thomas Hearns, which Leonard won in the 14th round, was perhaps the best of his career and made him the most popular boxer in the world. An eye injury put Leonard out of action off and on for several years, until he came back for one more big fight, this time against Marvin Hagler. Sugar Ray won a split decision to establish himself as one of the best fighters of all time. Sugar Ray Leonard now appears on the boxing reality series “The Contender.”
