A 1965 Georgia Tech graduate with a degree in industrial management, Curry spent most of his time in the Yellow Jackets uniform. Starring as the center for the Yellow Jackets football team impressed the NFL, where he became an all-pro center.
Bill Curry shined as a professional football player with the Green Bay Packers, Houston Oilers, Baltimore Colts and Los Angeles Rams. Success became natural for Curry, starting at center for the Packers’ Super Bowl I appearance, and the Colts’ Super Bowl V berth. Regarded for his impeccable knowledge of the offensive line, Curry took his game to the sidelines, becoming Georgia Tech’s head coach in 1980. The 1985 campaign may have been his best as Curry led the Yellow Jackets to an amazing 9-2-1 record, a victory in the All-American Bowl, and won the ACC Coach of the Year.
Curry coached three winning seasons at Georgia Tech and then another three when he moved on to the University of Alabama. While at with the Crimson Tide, Curry brought home an SEC Championship and made three straight bowl games. Dedicated to his players’ success, Curry often suspended his star players for unsportsmanlike celebrations. He embodied what it meant to be a coach, putting the team before himself and other stars.
