In 1969, the first on-air Charley Steiner appearance took place as a newscaster for WIRL radio in Peoria. Two years after graduating, he hosted his first sports show on KSTT radio. The following year, he went on to become the news director of WAVZ radio, and then to WPOP radio. In 1977, he joined WERE radio as a sportscaster and news director. During this time, the first Charley Steiner appearance on television also took place when he became a sports commentator for WKYC-TV.
In 1978, Steiner entered WXLO-FM, where he was a newscaster, and later moved over to WOR as sports director. From 1983 to 1985, he was the play-by-play voice for the USFL’s New Jersey Generals, as well as for the NFL’s New York Jets in 1986 to 1987. From 2003 to 2005, he was the host of Football America for the NFL Network.
In 1999, Steiner became the lead announcer for MLB’s national radio package for ESPN, including Sunday night games, the All-Star Game, and postseason games. In 2001, he worked in the New York Yankee’s radio booth, and after three years, he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Aside from the games, Steiner also talks to writers, authors, and broadcasters to discuss their thoughts and analysis of the current state of baseball in Baseball Beat on XM Satellite Radio’s MLB Home Plate channel.
