Biography

Garry Thorne’s career as a play-by-play announcer includes seven-years with ABC Sports’ coverage of the NHL. The first Garry Thorne appearance on ESPN was in July 1988 for the inaugural Triple-A All-Star Game. He also served as the original host and moderator in ESPN’s “The Sports Reporters.” In 1992, he began providing commentary for ESPN’s “National Hockey Night” telecasts.

From 1985 to 1988, Thorne’s job as a radio broadcaster included covering the New York Mets. In 1994, there was also a Garry Thorne appearance in the Mets’ television booth. In 1997, he did play-by-play for CBS’s NCAA Tournament games. He also did commentating and directing for the Maine Guides, a Triple-A ball club which he co-owned for four years. In addition, Thorne covered University of Maine hockey games for WBGW-AM and WABI-TV and radio for nine years.

In 1989, Thorne covered the Chicago White Sox on WFLD-TV and was a back up play-by-play announcer on ABC’s Thursday night telecasts of MLB. He also did on-the-field jobs as a reporter for the World Series.

From 1988 to 1992, there was also a Garry Thorne appearance as play-by-play commentator on SportsChannel America’s NHL telecasts and New Jersey Devils telecasts on SportsChannel New York.

In 1998, Thorne worked for CBS as a reporter during the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.
