Biography

The first Jim Lampley appearance on the broadcasting scene began in 1974, when he was chosen in what ABC called a talent hunt. At ABC, he covered baseball games, the 1986 and 1987 Indianapolis 500, five Olympics, and the program Wide World of Sports. In 1985, he served as one of the anchors for ABC’s coverage of Super Bowl XIX.

In 1987, Lampley moved to CBS, where he became a sports news anchor and correspondent on the daily news show in Los Angeles. He also covered boxing fights for HBO, as well as HBO’s annual Wimbledon telecast. In 1992, he attended the 1992 Albertville Olympics as a news anchor for KCBS-TV.

Following his career in CBS, Lampley transferred to NBC, where he helped cover the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In 1993, Lampley did studio hosting for the NFL on NBC. He also did play-by-play duties for NBC’s NFL telecasts. Before the 1996 Atlanta games, he began working at the HBO series, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. He earned three Emmy awards for participating in that show. In 1998, he covered the Nagano Olympics and the Goodwill Games for Turner, and the 2000 Sydney Olympics for NBC.

In 2004, Lampley was the anchor for both NBC’s and USA Network’s Summer Olympics coverage. In 2006, he served as central correspondent for the Winter Olympics which aired on the NBC Universal networks. Covering the 2006 Olympics was the 13th for Lampley, surpassing the record set by Jim McKay.
