If there was an all-star team for baseball writers, Peter Gammons would surely be the centerpiece. In nearly 40 years of covering the sport, Gammons has clearly distanced himself from other journalists and is universally admired by players, fans and media members alike. A native of Massachusetts, Gammons started his career with the Boston Globe as a beat writer for the Red Sox. He also wrote for Sports Illustrated, and in 1990 joined ESPN and has since become the network’s top baseball reporter. In 2006, Gammons suffered a brain aneurysm, but it wasn’t long before he was back at work covering the sport he loves. He is one of the few sportswriters to be honored with induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Gammons is also known for his love of music and he’s a pretty good guitar player.
