Biography

The first Cheryl Miller appearance on the basketball court was in 1978, when she played at Riverside Polytechnic High School. She was a four-year letter winner and led her team to a 132-4 record. In 1981, she was awarded the Dial Award for the national high-school scholar-athlete of the year. She was also the first player to be named an All-American four times by Parade Magazine. Miller was also Street & Smith’s national High School Player of the Year in consecutive years (1981 to 1982).

Miller had an amazing career in the NCAA where she played for the University of Southern California. She was again a four-year letter winner and four-time All American. She led the Trojans to two NCAA titles in 1983 and 1984 and won the MVP award both years. For three years she was named Naismith College Player of the Year. She also earned the Wade trophy and the Broderick Award as the Female College Basketball Player of the Year. Miller also starred on the United States National Basketball Team that won gold medals at the Pan American games in 1983, the Summer Olympics in 1984, and the Goodwill Games in 1986. Miller became the first female ever nominated for the James E. Sullivan Award in 1986. She was also the first player at USC to have her jersey number retired.
