Title: College Basketball CoachAs a player, Crum won the Irv Pohlmeyer Memorial Trophy for outstanding first-year varsity player and the Bruin Bench Award for most improved player. But Denny Crum is probably better known as a coach. The first Denny Crum appearance as a head coach was in 1971, taking the University of Louisville to the Final Four six times.
Crum was named National Coach of the Year three times, Metro Conference Coach of the Year three times, Sporting News Coach of the Year, Basketball Weekly Coach of the Year, and Basketball Weekly Man of the Year. In 1993, he became the second fastest coach to reach 500 wins, ranking 16th in overall Division I wins.
In 1994, Crum was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, becoming the only active coach to receive the ward. In 2002, he was awarded with the Legends of Coaching by the John R. Wooden Award Committee. This award is given depending on a coach’s character, success rate on the court, graduation rate of student athletes, as well as coach philosophy. In February 2007, Louisville officially named its home floor at Freedom Hall “Denny Crum Court.”
