Frank Beamer and Blacksburg, Virginia are synonymous with each other. Ever since his time as a cornerback for the Hokies in the 1960’s, he has been a staple in the college football crazy town. And now with more than twenty years at the Hokies’ helm, the name Frank Beamer has become synonymous with Virginia Tech.
Frank Beamer started making his mark in collegiate football as a starting cornerback for the Virginia Tech Hokies from 1966-1969. Following his graduation from Virginia Tech, he accepted a job as a graduate assistant at the University of Maryland. He slowly worked his way up from position to position until he was hired to be Virginia Tech’s head coach in 1987.
Upon his return to Virginia Tech, Beamer inherited a team that had never enjoyed much success. Beamer was quickly able to change the fortunes of the program though. In the 21 years he has been coaching of Virginia Tech, Beamer has led the team to 15 bowl games, three of which were Bowl Championship Series games. In addition to his success on the field, Beamer emerged as a guiding force in the wake of the shooting tragedy at Virginia Tech in April 2007. The man who epitomizes the university was able to help the healing process by speaking with parents of victims and ultimately managed to lead his team to a BCS Bowl.
