During his early years as a coach, Gene Stallings was primed to be a great head coach. He played college football at Texas A&M for Paul “Bear” Bryant and was one of the famous Junction Boys. Playing under Bear Bryant gave him an insight into football that few people ever gain. Bear Bryant is remembered as one of the greatest coaches of all time, and Gene Stallings learned everything in his early stages from him.

Gene Stallings graduated and followed Bryant to the University of Alabama as an assistant coach. After making an impression on the national scene, Stallings left Alabama to take over the head coaching reigns at his alma mater. Stallings obviously learned aplenty from Bryant as he led the Aggies to a Southwest Conference Championship in 1967.

From Texas A&M, Gene Stallings turned pro and joined Tom Landry’s Dallas Cowboys coaching staff in the early 1970’s where he stayed 14 years, enjoying three Super Bowl berths, winning one. After the Cowboys work, Stallings moved back to head coaching, taking over the NFL’s Cardinals for a few years. Gene Stallings returned to the NCAA in 1990, following his mentor’s steps by taking charge of the Crimson Tide. In his final tenure, Stallings led Alabama to the Southeast Conference Championship and National Title in 1992.
