Title: College Basketball CoachGeno Auriemma has led the University of Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball team for more than two decades. During those 20 years, the Huskies rose out of obscurity to become not only a national power but a fan favorite too. Born in Montella, Italy, Auriemma moved to the U.S. while in elementary school, and he attended college at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. After two assistant coaching jobs, Auriemma was hired as the head coach at Connecticut, and he quickly turned the team around. Auriemma has since won five Naismith College Coach of the Year awards with a record that stands at 621-120, a whopping 83.3 percent win clip.
A number of talented players have passed through Auriemma’s program, including Rebecca Lobo and Sue Bird, and earned eight multiple All-America titles. UConn basketball is so popular under Auriemma’s regime that the attendance for home games at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in Storrs has set Big East Conference records. The rivalry between Auriemma’s Huskies and coach Pat Summitt’s Tennessee Volunteers is perhaps the biggest in all of women’s college basketball.
