Biography

Greg Schiano has become known for success in recent years, but it took some time to get to that point. Greg Schiano played linebacker for Bucknell for three years and then served as a graduate assistant before moving to Penn State at the same position. He impressed the coaches enough to earn an assistant coach position with the Nittany Lions that he held until 1995 when he headed to the big time.

The experience Greg Schiano received at Penn State was on the defensive end, so the Chicago Bears took him on as a defensive assistant. Defense has been where Greg Schiano has made a name for himself as a coach over the years. The University of Miami took a major interest in his defensive capabilities at the elite level, so they hired him in 1999 to be the defensive coordinator. Schiano would take the Hurricanes to the number 12 ranked defense in the entire country and then number five in 2000.

After a decade of hard work and perseverance, it all paid off for Greg Schiano as his home state of New Jersey beckoned. The Rutgers University Scarlet Knights hired Greg Schiano to be their head coach at the end of 2000, where he has been ever since. Rutgers has not been known as a football powerhouse for years, but after a few years under Greg Schiano, things started to turn around. In his time there, Schiano has led a number of defensive standouts to the NFL and created a winning program. 2006 was a major year for Schiano and Rutgers as he took them to their first national ranking in three decades, a two-loss season and the school’s first-ever bowl victory. This turnaround success awarded Schiano numerous Coach of the Year awards.
