Until a few years ago, many people didn’t even know that Wake Forest had a football program. The Demon Deacons were known mostly for their basketball team and former standout Tim Duncan, but Jim Grobe has done a lot to change that since taking over as head football coach in 2001. In 2006, Grobe led the Demon Decons to their first ever 11-win season, an ACC championship and first BCS Bowl Game appearance in the Orange Bowl. And even though Wake Forest lost to Louisville, they put the college football world on notice that they are now a force to be reckoned with. Among the many awards that Grobe won for the 2006 season were the AP Coach of the Year, Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year and ACC Coach of the Year (with 80 out of 80 possible votes).

As a player, Jim Grobe was a standout at Ferrum College and then the University of Virginia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in guidance and counseling. Those skills have served him well in his long coaching career that also includes time at Marshall, Air Force and Ohio. Grobe and his wife, Holly, are the parents of two sons.
