A native of Brooklyn, New York, Paterno played quarterback and defensive back at Brown University in the 1940s before taking an assistant coaching job at Penn State in 1950 and then later becoming the head coach. In his many decades at Penn State, Paterno has led the Nittany Lions to 22 bowl victories (an all-time record) and two national championships. And while some fans started to suggest he retire after a couple of tough seasons in 2003 and 2004, Penn State stormed back to prominence in 2005 with an 11-1 record, a Big 10 title and a victory in the Orange Bowl. There will simply never be another coach like Joe Paterno ever again.
