Although he is perhaps best known as a college and NBA head coach, the first basketball-related Larry Brown appearance came as a point guard for Frank McGuire and Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina. Upon graduation, Brown was widely considered “too small” to play professional basketball, but that didn’t stop him. Brown took up a post as a head coach in the ABA before returning to the NCAA where he coached both UCLA and Kansas. Brown took Kansas all the way to the national championship, only to leave shortly after to become an NBA head coach.

In the NBA, Larry Brown was equally successful, eventually delivering the Detroit Pistons to the 2004 NBA championship and becoming the only coach in basketball history to win both an NCAA Championship and an NBA Championship.
