Because Mike Holmgren has spent his NFL head coaching career in the relatively small markets of Green Bay and Seattle, sometimes his incredible success is overlooked. Only twice since 1992 has Holmgren had a losing record at the end of the season and he’s taken both the Seahawks and Packers to the Super Bowl, winning it all in Super Bowl XXXI with Bret Favre and the Pack. Born in San Francisco, Holmgren went to USC, where he played quarterback on the 1967 national championship team and then was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1970 NFL Draft. He never played in the NFL, but he made his mark by coaching quarterbacks like Steve Young and Joe Montana witht the San Francisco 49ers and Favre with the Packers. It’s often forgotten that the Packers were a pretty bad team before Holmgren took over in 1992 and that the team had been to the playoffs just once in the two decades before that. But under Holmgren, they turned into one of the NFL’s premier teams and a Super Bowl champion. The coach has done the same with the Seattle Seahawks, and his legacy also includes several assistants who have gone on to be head coaches like Andy Reid, Jon Gruden and Steve Mariucci. Holmgren and his wife, Kathy, have four daughters and live in the Seattle area.
