You don’t always get a second chance in life, but Mike Riley did. Because his father, Bud Riley, was a longtime defensive coordinator for the Oregon State Beavers, the younger Riley dreamed of one day following in his father’s footsteps. He did just that in 1997, when he was named head coach of Oregon State, but after two losing seasons he left for the NFL to become the head coach of the San Diego Chargers. Then after three tough years in San Diego, Riley got the chance to return to Oregon State to finish the job he started, and he’s since guided the Beavers to four bowl game victories.
Although he was born in Idaho, Riley grew up in Oregon, where he quarterbacked Corvallis High School to a pair of state titles before winning a national championship at Alabama while playing under Paul “Bear” Bryant. From there, he tackled a variety of coaching jobs, including a stint in the CFL where he won two Grey Cups (the Canadian version of the Super Bowl). And now he’s building a legacy at Oregon State and making the Beavers one of the best teams in the Pac-10 Conference.
