The Pittsburgh Steelers had a tough decision to make when longtime head coach Bill Cowher decided to resign after the 2006 season. In a surprise to some, Steelers management selected Mike Tomlin, who was just 34 years old at the time. But it sure looks like they made the right choice, as Tomlin guided the Steelers to a 10-6 record in his first season while winning the respect of both players and fans. The Steelers have a history of long-term coaches, as Chuck Noll (22 years) and Cowher (15 years) are the only other head coaches since 1969. Although Tomlin is known as a tremendous defensive coach, he excelled on offense as a wide receiver at the College of William and Mary. But once he turned his attention to coaching, he focused on stopping opposing offenses. During his time as an assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he won a Super Bowl and made a name for himself as a coach with a bright future. After just one season as the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, he was offered the head coaching job with the Steelers in 2007. Tomlin and his wife, Kiya, have a daughter and two sons.
