With his slicked-back hair and designer suits, not to mention seven NBA championships in his career, Pat Riley is a basketball icon. A star player for the University of Kentucky, Pat Riley also had a solid playing career for the San Diego Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns in the NBA, for the latter of which he won his first NBA title. After retiring, Pat Riley took a position as a broadcaster for the Lakers before becoming the team’s head coach for the 1981-82 season. He won an NBA championship in that first season and captured three more in his time with the Lakers, coining the term “three-peat” (even though he never actually won three in a row, he owns the trademark on that phrase). Pat Riley also took the New York Knicks to the NBA Finals, losing to the Houston Rockets. Perhaps his greatest coaching achievement was in 2006, as he led the Miami Heat to their first ever NBA title. On the verge of going down 0-3 in the NBA Finals, the Heat staged a remarkable comeback to win Game 3 thanks to Dwayne Wade and went on to take the series 4-2.
