Pete Carroll, who brought USC Trojan Football back to life and return the program to national prominence. Not only is he the head coach but he is also the team’s defensive coordinator. During the 2004 season, the Trojans were ranked number 1 and went to their second consecutive national championship, beating Oklahoma. The Trojans were the only the second team to hold its AP pre-season ranking of number 1 and carry it through the entire season.
In 2004 Carroll was named the National Quarterback Club College Coach of the Year; he was also a finalist for the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Award and the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. Also in 2004 ESPN.com named him Pac-10 Coach of the Year. Six of his Trojan players have received the Heisman Trophy, including, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush.
Pete Carroll helped develop a non-profit group called “A Better L.A” that works to reduce gang violence by sending the message of change in individuals and communities. He received the Courageous Leadership Award from Women against Gun Violence because of his work within the community.
