Rich Rodriguez is now one of the most successful and well-known coaches in college football, but his career didn’t exactly get off to a flying start. Rodriguez’s first head coaching job, at just 24 years old, was at tiny Salem College. After going 2-8 in the 1988 season, the school decided to stop playing football altogether. But Rodriguez didn’t give up on his dream of being a big-time college coach and after assistant coaching stints at Glenville State, Tulane and Clemson, he got his shot to take over the West Virginia Mountaineers program. Born and raised in West Virginia, Rodriguez played defensive back for WVU in the 1980s, so he was a popular choice to return to his alma mater as head coach. In seven seasons in Morgantown, Rodriguez compiled a 60-26 record and turned the program into one of the best in the nation. Then the Michigan Wolverines came calling, and Rodriquez became the new head coach in Ann Arbor starting with the 2008 season. His spread option offense is sure to shake up the Big Ten and has Michigan fans excited about the future.
