When Sean Payton won the NFL Coach of the Year Award in 2006, it was as much for his contributions on the sidelines as it was for his work for the community of New Orleans. In a region devastated by Hurricane Katrina, Payton and the New Orleans Saints played a small part in bringing things back to normal by filling up the Louisiana Superdome with fans, making it to the NFC Championship Game and by donating their money and time to help rebuild New Orleans. A graduate of Eastern Illinois University, Payton spent a few years playing professionally in the Arena Football League, Canadian Football League, a pro league in Europe and a short stint in the NFL as a replacement player during the 1987 strike. Then he took a series of assistant coaching jobs before working his way onto Bill Parcells’ staff with the Dallas Cowboys. It was there that Payton helped the career of Tony Romo (who also went to Eastern Illinois) before getting his first head coaching job with the Saints. As one of the youngest coaches in the NFL, Payton has a long and bright future ahead of him.
