For a football program like Alabama, an 8-4 record and a victory in the Liberty Bowl is no big deal. But for the Mississippi Bulldogs, who last won the SEC title back in 1941, those two accomplishments were a huge deal. And much of the credit has to go to head coach Sylvester Croom, who in 2004 became the first African-American head coach in the SEC. After suffering through three seasons with a total of just nine victories, Croom got the program back on track in 2007 and the future looks bright for the Bulldogs. Prior to taking over as head coach, Croom spent time on the Alabama coaching staff in addition to many years in the NFL with the Packers, Lions, Chargers, Colts and Bucs. A graduate of Alabama, where he was the team captain under legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, Croom played center on the Crimson Tide national championship team of 1973 and later had a short career in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints.
