He completed 10 seasons as a Division I head coach, with his 10 teams bow eligible by season’s end. The team’s winning record in 2007 gave him a coaching record of eight consecutive winning seasons in Clemson. Bowden also became the first coach in NCAA history to defeat two coaches with more than 200 wins in a one-month span. Among his awards are C-USA (Conference-USA) Coach of the Year in 1998, ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2003, and FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) Grant Teaff National Football Coach of the Year in 2006.

Bowden’s coaching career includes being the head coach at Tulane and an assistant coach at the University of Alabama, Auburn University, Duke University, the University of Kentucky, and East Carolina University. He also became an assistant to his father, the famous Bobby Bowden, at Florida State University. Before becoming a coach, Tommy Bowden began his college football experience at West Virginia, where he was a walk-on wide receiver for his father’s teams. However, inhis senior year in 1976, he played for Frank Cignetti, the elder Bowden’s successor.
