Biography

In his 30 years of experience in football, Tyrone Willingham was able to develop a coaching style that focuses on intelligence, discipline, commitment, and unselfish play. His early career includes assistant coaching positions for Michigan State University, North Carolina State University, Rice University, and Stanford University. He also served as running backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings in 1992.

Before his current post at the University of Washington, he held head coach positions for Stanford in 1994 until 20001, and University of Notre Dame in 2002 through 2005. Willingham was the only first-year coach in Notre Dame’s football history to bring 10 wins by going 8-0 at the start of the season. He was then named the ESPN/Home Depot College Coach of the Year for his achievement. His other awards include the Scripps College Coach of the Year, the Black Coaches Association Male Coach of the Year, and the George Munger Award College Coach of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club.

Willingham also became the first college football coach to earn The Sporting News Sportsman of the Year award in 2002, where he joined the ranks of other sports legends in the field of baseball, basketball, and hockey. The Irish coach was also named the sixthmost influential minority in sports by Sports Illustrated. He is currently the President of the AFCA Board of Trustees.
