His other awards include the Scripps College Coach of the Year, the Black Coaches Association Male Coach of the Year, and the George Munger Award College Coach of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club.
Willingham also became the first college football coach to earn The Sporting News Sportsman of the Year award in 2002, where he joined the ranks of other sports legends in the field of baseball, basketball, and hockey. The Irish coach was also named the sixthmost influential minority in sports by Sports Illustrated. He is currently the President of the AFCA Board of Trustees.
