Despite having a tough college basketball career, an Alex Karras appearance still includes a selection as a first team All-American in 1956, and as a consensus first team All-American in 1957. Although he placed second in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, Karras received the 1957 Outland Trophy.

Karras’s NFL career kept him with only one team and one city – the Detroit Lions, where he became an All-Pro selection from 1967 to 1969.

In 1977, Karras was inducted into the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame, and, in 1991, the College Football Hall of Fame.
