After a successful college career for Maryland State College (now Maryland Eastern Shore), Art Shell joined the AFL and starred for the Raiders throughout their transition from the AFL to the NFL, and Oakland to Los Angeles. With Shell’s help, the Raiders played in 24 playoff contests and two Super Bowls.

When Shell’s playing career ended, he made the transition into coach. In 1990, Shell was named head coach of the Oakland Raiders, and compiled a 54-38 record in four seasons. He also won AFC Coach of the Year honors in 1990 by helping the Raiders to the AFC West title.

In 2006, Shell would briefly return as head coach of the raiders, but he was fired after compiling a 2-14 record and feuding with wide receiver Jerry Porter.

An interesting Art Shell speaker topic would be his diabetes, as Shell hold the Pro Football record for playing the longest as a diabetic.

There was an Art Shell appearance in eight Pro Bowls. He was twice selected a Second-team All-Pro, and three times was named a First-team All-Pro. In addition, there was an Art Shell appearance on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Football Players of all time.
