Biography

Portis was already making a name for himself even as a high school student at Gainesville, being named as “Honorable Mention All-American” by USA Today. A Clinton Portis appearance as a tailback helped him place fourth on the Florida Times-Union “Super 75,” and he was named to the first-team all-state and was an all-area selection. Recognized as the “Player of the Year” by Gainesville Sun, a Clinton Portis appearance set a school record rushing for 2,036 yards, averaging 8.0 yards per carry and 26 touchdowns.

When he entered college, Portis set a school freshman record with five 100-yard performances. He also led the team with 838 yards and eight touchdowns on 143 carries in 10 games. In 2001, Portis helped the Hurricanes win the National Championship. He ranks fourth on the Miami career rushing yards list and tied the Miami career record for 14 100-yard rushing performances.

The first Clinton Portis appearance in the NFL was in the 2002 NFL Draft, selected 51st overall by the Denver Broncos. His first season was concluded with an NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year title and inclusion in the 2003 Pro Bowl. In 2004, he was traded to the Washington Redskins.
