It’s not easy for a punter to change the way the game of football is played – basically his job is just to kick the ball and then sit back down on the bench. But Donny Anderson is largely responsible for dramatic changes to the punting game in the 1960s. A star running back and punter at Texas Tech, Anderson was drafted by legendary coach Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers in 1965. As a punter, Anderson didn’t go for distance like most kickers at the time, but rather he went for a big hang time, which allowed the coverage team to get down the field and almost always prevent any kind of return. Because of Anderson, the NFL had to change the rules regarding punt coverage to give the receiving team some kind of chance to return a punt. And when he wasn’t punting the ball, Anderson was running with it. Over a nine-year pro career with the Packers and St. Louis Cardinals, he rushed for nearly 5,000 yards with 2,500 more as a receiver and a total of 55 touchdowns. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame and Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, Anderson was an important part of the team that won Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II.
