Biography

Doug Flutie’s career in professional football spanned two decades where he repeatedly overcame on and off the field challenges. Doug Flutie was one of the most popular and respected players in the sport. The Maryland native earned his stripes playing for Boston College, where he won the 1984 Heisman Trophy and was part of one of the most famous plays in the history of college football. His game-winning hail mary against the Miami Hurricanes is still replayed over and over again during the college football season. Despite his collegiate success, the NFL only showed mild interest with Flute standing just 5’ 10.” Doug Flutie turned pro with the now defunct USFL’s New Jersey Generals.

He made the move to the NFL in 1986, first with the Chicago Bears and then the New England Patriots before he signed with the Canadian Football League’s British Columbia Lions. In his seven seasons in Canada with the Lions, Toronto Argonauts and Calgary Stampeders, Flutie was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player six times and three times the MVP in the Grey Cup, the CFL’s version of the Super Bowl. The prominent Canadian success he endured led Flutie back to the NFL with the Buffalo Bills in 1998 and made it to the Pro Bowl. He was also honored with the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year Award. Flutie also played for the San Diego Chargers and the Patriots again before retiring in 2005. Considered too small to succeed in the pros, Flutie proved all the experts wrong. He has now taken on a new role as a college football analyst on ESPN and ABC.
