One of the most distinguished running backs to ever play college football, Earl Campbell is a remarkable athlete and speaker. Campbell won the Heisman Trophy while playing at the University of Texas in 1977 and led the nation in rushing. Campbell joined the Houston Oilers as the first player taken in the 1978 NFL Draft after being the first player to earn All-Southwest Conference honors in each of his four collegiate years and named as a consensus All-American.
The Texas native brought his sensational game to the NFL from the very start. In his first year he was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player, All-Pro, and Rookie of the Year. He won the league rushing championship and easily earned himself a place on the AFC Pro Bowl squad.
In 1981, he won his fourth straight AFC rushing title. A superb runner, Campbell was picked for the Pro Bowl in five of his first six NFL seasons. Midway into his seventh season, the powerful running back was traded by the Oilers to the New Orleans Saints for a first-round draft pick. He played a season and a half with the Saints before retiring after the 1985 campaign. His career numbers and accolades stand out more when you take into account how short of a career Campbell had as compared with his counterparts in rushing greatness. Back problems and injuries associated with his football career pushed Campbell into that early retirement and still plague him today, but he is still fighting to live his life as strongly as possible.
