Although he wanted to go to the University of Oklahoma, Eric Dickerson wound up playing for coach Ron Meyer at Southern Methodist University on the advice of his grandmother. For whatever the reason, the choice worked out well for Dickerson. He would go on to gain a total of 4,450 yards in 79 carries to break Earl Campbell’s Southwest Conference record for yards and attempts. He would because a Second-team All-American in 1981, and Dickerson received First-team All-American honors in 1982.
Although Dickerson was interested in joining the United States Football League, again at the advice of his family – this time his mother – Dickerson joined the more established NFL. The advice, once again, turned out to be helpful. Dickerson went on to a career largely placing him as one of the best running backs in NFL history. Although his career spanned four different teams, there was an Eric Dickerson appearance in six pro bowls, he earned five First-team All-Pro selections, the 1983 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, and multiple Offensive Player of the Year awards.
