As one of the first NFL quarterbacks to “scramble,” Fran Tarkenton helped start a revolution at the position that continued with stars like Randall Cunningham, Steve Young and Vince Young. Instead of always dropping straight back to pass, Tarkenton often moved, or scrambled, around in the pocket before throwing the ball, or simply took off downfield to gain yards. Nicknamed “Fran the Scrambler,” Tarkenton took the Minnesota Vikings to three Super Bowls, and although he never won an NFL championship, he was one of the league’s biggest stars in the 1960s and 1970s. After retiring, Tarkenton embarked on several successful ventures, including a broadcast career with a stint on the popular “Monday Night Football,” software development and small business services. A resident of Georgia, Tarkenton was named to nine NFL Pro Bowls and is a member of both the Pro Football and College Football Halls of Fame.
