Born in a little town called Arcadia, the seat of Bienville Parish in north Louisiana, Fred Dean would develop his foundations in football without straying far from home. He graduated from nearby Ruston High School, and, spurning an offer from Grambling State University to play for legendary head coach Eddie Robinson, chose to stay in Ruston and attend Louisiana Tech.
The decision to attend Tech certainly didn’t hurt Dean’s pro football chances. He was an All-Southland Conference defensive tackle and went on to become the 33rd overall pick in the 1975 NFL Draft. With Dean’s defensive prowess, the Chargers were one of the toughest teams to score on in the league. In fact, any Fred Dean appearance had so much influence on the game that the Chargers’ decision to trade him to the 49ers is largely considered one of the most important mid-season trades in the history of football. The Chargers’ defense immediately declined, and the 49ers defense dramatically improved.
Dean and his 49ers would go on to win two Super Bowls, and Dean himself won the 1981 UPI NFC Player of the Year award.
