Irving Fryar made history in 1984 when he became the first wide receiver to be selected with the #1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Over his 17-year career in the NFL, Fryar proved to be one of the most consistent receivers of his era with 851 passes caught for a total of 12,785 yards and 84 touchdowns while playing for the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins. The former standout for the Nebraska Cornhuskers was selected for the NFL Pro Bowl a total of five times, and he scored the Patriots’ lone touchdown in Super Bowl XX, won by the Chicago Bears. Fryar had his share of off-field difficulties until he turned his life around and eventually became a Pentecostal minister. In addition to his ministry work, Fryar also operates a youth football summer camp in New Jersey, where he now lives.
