Just about every football fan (and many non-football fans) remember the infamous broken leg suffered by Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann on a Monday Night Football game in 1985. What many fans don’t know is that rookie Jay Schroeder was the man with the tough job of stepping in to replace Theismann. The following season, Schroeder guided the Redskins to a record of 12-4 and the team made it to the NFC Championship Game. Schroeder threw for more than 4,000 yards to earn a spot in the NFL Pro Bowl, and the following season he shared the starting job with Doug Williams when the Redskins win Super Bowl XXII. Later in his career Schroeder also played for the Raiders, Bengals and Cardinals before retiring in 1994.

Although he was born in Milwaukee, Schroeder grew up in Southern California, where he attended high school with noted actor Forrest Whitaker and then went on to play both football and baseball at UCLA. Schroeder now spends his time as a coach at Snow Canyon High School in Utah and also as an NFL broadcaster for Sky Sports.
