Perhaps Jim Plunkett didn’t put up the gaudy numbers of guys like Dan Marino or John Elway, but with a Heisman Trophy, Rookie of the Year Award, a Comeback Player of the Year Award and two Super Bowl rings, the longtime Raiders quarterback still stands among the best to play the game. Born in San Jose, California, Plunkett worked hard in his youth to help his family financially, and his athletic talents earned him a scholarship at Stanford University. Although he struggled early on, he emerged as one of the best quarterbacks in the nation during his sophomore and junior years and then in 1970 he won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first Latino to take the award.

After being picked by the New England Patriots with the #1 overall selection in the 1971 NFL Draft, Plunkett won the NFL Rookie of the Year Award. But from there his career has its ups and downs, and after a stint with the 49ers he landed with the Raiders, for whom he figured to be a backup. But when the team’s starter went down during the 1980 season, Plunkett got his chance and took the Raiders all the way to Super Bowl XV, where he threw for three touchdowns and was named the game’s MVP after the Raiders beat the Eagles 27-10. Within two years he was a backup again, but he once again came off the bench to lead the Raiders to a win in Super Bowl XVIII, securing his place as a Raider legend. Plunkett now does radio and TV work covering, of course, the Oakland Raiders.
