The Denver Broncos probably were not expecting much from Karl Mecklenburg when they made the former Minnesota Gopher the 310th overall pick in the 12th round of the 1983 NFL Draft. But what a pleasant surprise he turned out to be, as Mecklenburg anchored the dominant Broncos defense for more than a decade and went to six Pro Bowls during his career. With John Elway leading the offense and Mecklenburg racking up nearly 80 career sacks on defense, the Broncos made it to the playoffs nearly every year and made three Super Bowl appearances during Mecklenburg’s career. And although he never won a Super Bowl, the “Orange Crush” defense helped set the stage for the late 1990s when the Broncos won two straight Super Bowls. After Mecklenburg retired in 1994, he was inducted into the Denver Broncos Ring of Honor and he is now an active motivational speaker in addition to his work with the REACH Foundation, an organization that helps Denver-area youth.
