Canada is known as a hotbed of hockey talent, but the Great White North has also produced a few top NFL players, including Mark Rypien. A native of Calgary, Alberta, Rypien played his college ball at Washington State and was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 1986 NFL Draft. Although he was on the roster for the Redskins Super Bowl XXII victory, he didn’t see any action until the following season in 1988. He quickly became one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL and made the Pro Bowl in both 1989 and 1991, plus he was the MVP of Super Bowl XXVI as he threw for nearly 300 yards in the Redskins victory over the Buffalo Bills. Injuries took their toll on Rypien later in his career as he bounced around between the Browns, Rams, Eagles and Colts. Since retiring from the NFL, Rypien has been involved as a NASCAR Busch Series car owner and worked on his golf game while also devoting much of his time to fighting childhood cancer, which claimed the life of his son Andrew in 1998.
