Mel Blount story begins as a child growing up in poverty on a Georgia farm. However, thanks to his impressive athleticism, Blount became a high school star in baseball, football, basketball, and track. Upon graduation, he was offered a scholarship to Southern University, where he would go on to star and be an All-American pick as both a safety and a cornerback.

The first Mel Blount appearance as a starter in the NFL came in 1972 for the Pittsburgh Steelers. That first season, Blount didn’t allow a single touchdown. His size and speed made him an ideal NFL cornerback, and he was able to physically overpower receivers, even after the rules were changed to favor them and give defensive players less leeway.
