To win the Heisman Trophy, a college football player needs to put together a pretty incredible season. And few have been as spectacular as the 1983 season by Mike Rozier. As a member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Rozier led the NCAA in rushing with 2,148 yards while scoring 29 touchdowns and averaging nearly eight yards per carry. That made him the overwhelming choice for the Heisman, but instead of going to the NFL after college, Rozier signed with the Pittsburgh Maulers of the upstart USFL. After two successful seasons in the USFL, which folded in 1985, Rozier took on the NFL, where he played for the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons. Although hampered by a chronic ankle injury, he did hit the 1,000-yard mark with the Oilers in 1988 and made it to the NFL Pro Bowl twice. He retired from football in 1991 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. Rozier and his wife, attorney Rochelle Rozier, still live in his home state of New Jersey.
