As a collegiate, a professional and now an NFL executive, Ozzie Newsome has been a winner at every level. Born in Alabama, Newsome stayed close to home for his college career and starred at the University of Alabama, where he was a four-year starter as a tight end. During an era when tight ends were often used only sparingly as pass catchers, Newsome hauled in 102 receptions for more than 2,070 yards, which eventually resulted in his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. Then it was on to the NFL, where for 12 seasons Newsome was consistently one of the top offensive stars for the Cleveland Browns. He retired from the NFL in 1990, and in 1999 was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 2002, he became the first African-American general manager in the NFL, and he’s a big part of the reason that the Baltimore Ravens won the AFC North title in 2006. Newsome has long been rumored to be in line as the next Athletic Director at Alabama when the position comes open.
