Born in Wisconsin, where he excelled in athletics at Xavier High School in Appleton, Bleier played for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and was a member of the 1968 national championship team. He was all set for a career in the NFL, until the U.S. Army came calling, and Bleier answered the call to duty to serve in Vietnam. A shrapnel injury could have ended his pro career before it really started, but he worked hard and battled through the pain to return to the NFL. A fine runner in his own right, Bleier gained fame as the blocker for Franco Harris, and he was a big part of the Steelers’ four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s. Bleier told his life story in the book “Fighting Back: The Rocky Bleier Story,” which was also made into a TV movie. Bleier is a still a popular figure in the Steel City and tells his amazing story to others as a motivational speaker.
