Before Troy Aikman and Tony Romo, there was Roger Staubach. As the quarterback who turned the Dallas Cowboys into “America’s Team,” Staubach’s legacy has been secured as one of the greatest players in NFL history. Despite a successful football career at the U.S. Naval Academy, which included winning the 1963 Heisman Trophy and taking Navy to the Cotton Bowl, Staubach wasn’t drafted until the 10th round of the 1964 NFL Draft. Part of the reason for his slide down the draft board was that Staubach had a military commitment to serve in Vietnam, so he didn’t make his NFL debut until 1969. He took over the starting quarterback job in 1971 and led the Cowboys to victory in Super Bowl VI. Staubach was named the MVP of that Super Bowl, and he took the Cowboys back to the title game three more times and picked up another victory in Super Bowl XII. He is a distinguished member of the Cowboys Ring of Honor and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
