Thomas Jones’ spectacular football career started in high school, where he led his team to two state championships in 1994 and 1995. He still tops the VHSL record for the most rushing yards in a season and is included in the top fives of most scoring in a career and twice for single season, as well as rushing yards in a career, twice for single season and in a single game.

In college, there was a Thomas Jones appearance with the Viriginia Cavaliers, ending his collegiate career with eight conference and 15 team records. In 1999, he was voted as a consensus first-team All-American by The Associated Press, Football News, the Football Writers Association of America, Walter Camp Foundation, and The Sporting News. He also finished eighth for the 1999 Heisman Trophy.

Jones was the first ACC consensus All-American running back since 1978. His collegiate career records included leading the conference running backs in receptions and receiving yards, accumulating four 200-yard games, and finishing third in the nation in rushing and all-purpose yards per game.
