Proving what a talented athlete he was, Troy Aikman was drafted by the New York Mets, but of course he chose to play football instead, first attending the University of Oklahoma before transferring to UCLA. As a senior for the Bruins, Aikman earned the 1988 Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top quarterback and was drafted #1 by the then-lowly Dallas Cowboys in the 1989 NFL Draft.
After going 3-13 during the 1988 season, the Cowboys figured things couldn’t get any worse and they decided to start the rookie quarterback in 1989. That team went a dreadful 1-15 and Aikman was winless in his 11 starts. Labeled as a bust, Troy Aikman quickly proved his critics wrong as he led America’s Team to the playoffs in 1991 and later to three Super Bowl titles. Known as one of “The Triplets” along with running back Emmitt Smith and receiver Michael Irvin,
Aikman was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and is also a member of the Cowboys Ring of Honor. Aikman retired from football in 2000 and then joined Fox’s NFL telecasts as a color commentator for the 2001 season and within a few years received an Emmy Award nomination for his work.
