In 1980, Hal Sutton was named Golf Magazine’s College Player of the Year. He spring boarded off that accomplishment to launch into a successful PGA Tour career, earning his first victory in 1982 at the Walt Disney World Golf Classic in a playoff.
The next year, in only his third year of professional golf, Sutton won the PGA Championship, to date his only major. However, Sutton’s early success would tail off. He went from 1986 until 1995 without a PGA Tour victory and almost lost his Tour Card. By using a one-time-only exemption for players in the top 50 of the all-time PGA Tour career money list, Sutton was able to remain eligible until he won the BC Open in 1995. That win launched him into another successful string of championships, even defeating Tiger Woods in a head-to-head match in 2000 in the final pairing of The Players Championship.
