Biography

Best known for becoming the first African-American to play in the Masters Tournament in 1975, Elder turned pro in 1959 and went on to win four tournaments on the PGA Tour and eight on the Senior PGA Tour. He also played on the 1979 Ryder Cup team.

Mr. Elder has been inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the NCAA Hall of Fame. He has received an honorary doctorate degree from Daniel Hale Williams University and received the Sports Writers of America annual award for service and dedication presented at the 2000 Masters Golf Tournament.

Lee Elder Speaker

Elder’s early years were been tough. Because of the limited opportunities offered to African Americans, he could only practice by sneaking onto all white golf courses at night. Dropping out of high school, Elder positioned himself as a caddy for white golfers and later began to hustle on the golf course. Golf was Elder’s means of earning money to buy food after both his parents met tragic, young deaths. As a result, a Lee Elder speaker experience is a chance for him to talk about overcoming tragedy and adversity and succeeding no mater the odds.

Lee Elder Appearance

The first Lee Elder appearance at Augusta in 1975 broke the color barrier for the Masters. In a way, the Lee Elder appearance paced the way for Tiger Woods, and without Lee, who knows if Woods would be the legend he is today.

Lee Elder Endorsement

Lee Elder is involved in numerous charitable causes such as the Lee Elder Reunion Golf Tournament to aid underprivileged children, Boys and Girls Clubs, American Heart Association, and Diabetes Association.
