In 1967 Lee Trevino made his debut on the PGA Tour and finished 5th at his first U.S. Open golf championship. During his second year on the tour Lee won the U.S. Open, following that he won the money list title in 1970 and picked up 10 wins during ’71 and ’72. 1971 became a huge year for Trevino starting with another U.S. Open championship, the Canadian Open, and the Open Championship; he became the only player to win three national titles in the same year. Furthermore he was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year; ABC’s Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year and won the Hickok Belt.
Lee Trevino continued to win championships in 1974 when he captured the PGA Championship but his luck quickly changed when he was struck by lightning in 1975. Although he suffered back and spinal cord injuries, he was still one of the top golf players and won his final championship in 1984. He became apart of the Senior PGA Tour and had 29 wins including four senior majors.
Before Trevino made his mark on the golfing world, he served four years with the United States Marine Corps. Trevino has said that the time he spent playing golf both before and during his tour of duty helped him earn a sergeant’s promotion.
