Patience and consistency are two of the most important traits of a successful golfer, and Tom Kite has plenty of both. A native of McKinney, Texas, who started winning tournaments at age 11, Kite went to the University of Texas before turning pro in 1972. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1973 and in his PGA Tour career he scored 19 victories, topped by the 1992 U.S. Open. He also won the PGA Player of the Year Award in 1989 and the Bob Jones Award from the United States Golf Association for exemplary sportsmanship. Kite led the tour in money earned twice, and was also a major part of the U.S. Ryder Cup team for more than a decade. Since moving to the Champions Tour for players over 50, Kite has added more victories and earnings to his resume, and in 2004 he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. He also started Tom Kite Design, which has constructed more than a dozen golf courses all over the country.
